IN THE STUDIO:
HILARY TAIT NOROD INTERVIEWS KATARRA LARAE PETERSON
recorded on Instagram on
May 29, 2020
Hilary Tait Norod interviews Katarra LaRae Peterson, who is a painter and mixed-media artist currently living and working in the Bronx, New York. Her abstract works often derive their compositional structure from the landscape; however, recently she has been working on a commission, which is in direct conversation with Picasso’s painting La Guernica. While Picasso’s painting was a response to the 1937 bombing of the city La Guernica during the Spanish Civil War, LaRae Peterson’s paintings bring forth the traumatic history of the Black Wall Street riots held in Tulsa in 1921. Here, she speaks about the theoretical underpinnings of this work, as well as, her painterly process in general.
In The Studio, a series of virtual studio visits organized and made by artist Hilary Tait Norod, is a way to learn, share and connect more deeply with artists.
